9-15 Aug 2009: Benedictine Formation Week
Fr Steele, Br Luke, Br Karel, and Br Frank attended the Benedictine Formation Gathering in Jamberoo Abbey from 9 to 15 August 2009. This year’s theme was “Our Benedictine Story”.
Participants came from Jamberoo, Arcadia, Camperdown, Tarrawarra, and the Good Samaritan Sisters.
The input sessions were conducted in the big round tent called the “Yurt”. Presenters were Sr Hilda Scott OSB, Sr Bernadette Corboy SGS, Fr Bernard McGrath, Sr Christine Manning SGS, and Fr Michael Casey OCSO.
There was ample time for reflection and sharing with each other as well as social interaction during tea breaks and meal times. The Jamberoo community provided the midday meal and each of the participating community took turns in cooking the evening meal and facilitating the various offices during the day. On the last night, a BBQ was held.
The gathering concluded with Mass on Saturday morning in the Jamberoo Abbey chapel followed by a morning tea and a cultural dance by two Kiribati Good Samaritan Sisters. Before departing, we were blessed with a special prayer by the Jamberoo Sisters. [Report by Br Frank]

25 May 2009: "Small is Beautiful"
“Small is Beautiful is a gathering of sisters who belong to small religious congregations in the Archdiocese of Melbourne and beyond. The gatherings aim at promoting mutual support and opportunities for prayer and social activities. A committee of five sisters, belonging to five different congregations, meets regularly to organise and promote four annual events which usually include a reflection day and an outing. This year’s program included a visit to Tarrawarra Abbey at Yarra Glen on 16 May 2009. Twenty-five sisters from various religious congregations attended and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Breathing in the beauty of the valley and experiencing the warm hospitality of the Tarrawarra community made it a perfect day!”

12 April 2009: Easter Sunday
At 4.30 am, the monks and the visitors assembled outside the guesthouse for the Service of Light. After the new fire was blessed, we processed to the monastic church. The Exultet was sung by Br Bernard. We heard readings from the Scriptures which recalled how God saved his people throughout history and in the fullness of time, sent his Son to be the Redeemer. In his homily, Dom David asked us to ponder on the question: “What is the paschal mystery?” We are called to imitate Christ in his death and resurrection. We are no longer slaves. We have passover from one life to another, that is, into the freedom of the children of God. After the homily, water was blessed and all were invited to renew their baptismal promises. After Communion, the Office of Lauds was sung. Monks and visitors then proceeded to the guesthouse for breakfast.

11 April 2009: Holy Saturday
Today is a day of deep silence and profound hope
as we await for the One who was crucified and buried
to leave the tomb on Sunday morning.
“We adore you, O Christ and we bless you, because by your holy Cross and Resurrection you have redeemed the world”.
10-11 April 2009: Office of Vigils
The Office of Vigils was celebrated in almost total darkness on Good Friday and Holy Saturday at 4.00 am. Two monks led the liturgy from the lectern. The Cantor sang the litany at the beginning of the Office and later sang the poignant Lamentations of Jeremiah.

10 April 2009: Good Friday
The solemn celebration of the Lord’s Passion took place at 3.00 pm. On this day, the entire Church fixes her gaze on the Cross, which is a symbol of life and hope. The Old and New Testament readings prepared us very well for John’s account of the Passion. Three monk-priests took turn to read the Passion narrative. At the announcement of the death of Jesus, all knelt for a moment while the monks made a full prostration according to the Cistercian Rite. The liturgy then continued with the General Intercessions where we pray for the whole world; a sign that we belong to the universal Church. Before the veneration of the cross, the chanting of the “Reproaches” was done in English and Greek. After Communion, the assembly departed the church in silence.
9 April 2009: Holy Thursday
We begin the Easter Triduum with the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper. Immediately after the Gospel, the Mandatum or the washing of the feet took place. Dom David assisted by Br Hausia, and Fr Steele assisted by Br Samuel washed the feet of all the monks. In his homily, Dom David reminded all that the Eucharist signified the most important act of the assembly. As we remember the last supper of Jesus, we share the body and blood of Christ with the community. It is a gift given by Christ to his Church. After Communion, there was a meditative reading of the Last Supper discourse. Following the Prayer after Communion, the Abbot transferred the ciborium with hosts for Good Friday to the place of reposition. The monks and visitors spent some quiet moment of reflection after that.
5 April 2009: Passion Sunday
The monks and a large group of visitors assembled on the lawn outside the church for the Commemoration of the Lord’s Entrance into Jerusalem. The celebrant was the Abbot of Tarrawarra, Dom David Tomlins. After a few words of introduction, he prayed a blessing over the branches, and sprinkled them with holy water. Fr Steele Hartmann then proclaimed the Gospel from St Mark. After the Gospel, the monks and visitors processed to the church while chanting selected verses from Psalm 118. The hymn “All Glory Praise and Honour” concluded the procession as all entered the church for the Mass.
